Weather at Logan

Snow covers the tarmac between jetways at Boston Logan International Airport. Airplanes, airport vehicles and human feet all leave tracks.
Weather in Boston is nothing new, but despite huge delays and cancellations, I still escaped the falling snow at Logan International Airport and landed through relatively clear skies in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, my luggage didn't rendezvous with me, but the staff at both airports seemed unusually friendly and helpful, and I expect my bag to be delivered in the morning.

Evergreen Enlightenment 2007

A CD labeled 'Evergreen Enlightenment 2007' rests in the open tray of a laptop computer, while another CD labeled 'White Out' rests nearby. Their jewel box, with an insert matching the former CD, stands behind them.
I had the pleasure of eating some yummy Thai food with my old buddy Mike of the Geriatric Ravers list, which I once belonged to many years ago. We dined at The Similans in Cambridge, where Mike graced me with a copy of Evergreen Enlightenment 2007. This is the 18th time he's put together a compilation of unusual holiday music, and it's a gift I've happily received in the mail for many years. Reconnecting in person after such a long time made this year's disc that much sweeter... and spicier, too, considering the Gaprow Beef that came along with it!

The Boston I Remember

Three-foot-high box hedges line a walkway to a parking lot. The shrubs, path, lot and vehicles are all covered in approximately eight inches of snow.
My last trip to Boston in April was a bit wet but generally pleasant. This visit, a nor'easter dumped a foot of snow on the existing base of many inches and dropped temps into the twenties... much like I remember my previous visits many years ago. Since I came straight here from NYC, I wasn't prepared: my gloves, insulated underwear and sweaters are still home in Pittsburgh. Cleaning off the windshield with a short scraper and my bare hands was no day at the beach!

Sleepy New England Town

Houses surrounded by snow dot a riverbank. A tall church steeple towers over them in the distance.
I took my first ride on an Acela train today from New York City to Boston. As much as I love trains, I'm usually disappointed when I ride them. The trip seemed slower than I expected, except for a few spurts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts where it was too fast for me to even take pictures. I snapped this photo while passing Warwick, only a few miles from where I photographed the grave of Mercy Brown (an alleged vampire) a little over a year ago.

Tommy Amoeba and Phat Man Dee at the Gershwin Hotel

A man in a white fun-fur coat with silver satin lapels, and woman with green glitter lipstick and red-streaked hair sing cheek-to-cheek into an old-fashioned stainless steel microphone.
A change in travel arrangements gave me an extra night in New York City, so Matt and I caught fellow Pittsburners Phat Man Dee and Tommy Amoeba at the Gershwin Hotel.

Have a Broad Street, Wall Street Christmas!

A Christmas tree approximately twenty feet tall, erected in the middle of a pedestrian walkway, is covered in lights and topped with a large star. A wall of lights to the left creates the image of an American flag.
This giant holiday decoration stands in the middle of Broad Street, about half a block from Wall Street. I think I almost caught some slack for snapping a picture in this heavily-secured part of downtown Manhattan: as I walked away, I heard someone behind me shout "camera!" but I didn't turn to see if I was being addressed.

Vacant Lot

A mostly-vacant lot, sandwiched on all sides by narrow streets and high-rise buildings, is littered with construction debris.
Not much of a view from my room in the Gild Hall Hotel near Wall Street. I'm a bit pissed that it's no longer a member of the Priority Club loyalty program, but overall my stay hasn't been too bad.

Elf-Tease

A woman in a sexy elf costume pretends to begin a striptease.
This is the last of my "photos that almost made it to my 2007 Santarchy Pittsburgh gallery." Carolyn the elf was a near casualty earlier in the evening when she fell off her Santa during Candy Cane Jousting and almost didn't get back up. Fortunately, by the time we made it to Station Square, she was back in the game.

Santarchy Pittsburgh

A group of people dressed in seasonal costumes stand on a dance floor taking country line dancing lessons. A woman in an elf costume bends over, thrusting her butt toward the camera. Beside her, a man in a Santa suit turns to holler at a woman dressed as the reindeer Vixen.
Here's another photo that didn't make it to my 2007 Santarchy Pittsburgh gallery--but just barely. Over a dozen Santarchists invaded the dance floor at Saddle Ridge nightclub for country line dancing lessons. Some of them were better at following directions than others.

Reindeer Dance

A woman in a reindeer costume and another in an elf outfit strike silly poses behind a sidwalk parking meter as another elf looks on.
I spent the day selecting and editing photos from Pittsburgh's third annual Santarchy for inclusion in my gallery. Choosing a few dozen pictures out of over 200 isn't an easy task, and there are lots of images that, for one reason or another, don't quite make the cut. For example, I love this photo of Morley as Blitzen, but chose a more provocative portrait for the gallery.

Pittsburgh Santarchy vs. Scientology Pittsburgh

Two costumed Santas sing lewd carols from a song book while a conservatively-dressed woman turns away holding her nose.
Scientology Pittsburgh wasn't amused by our appearance in their storefront on East Carson Street yesterday during Santarchy, Pittsburgh's officially unofficial SantaCon/Santa Rampage, coordinated by the Pittsburgh Cacophony Society. After listening to our drunken Santa Claus impersonators sing a lewd carol, they quickly shuffled us out the door so they could continue their plans to prepare to evacuate their meat bodies and return to outer space.

Scientology Pittsburgh was just one of the many places Pittsburgh's Santarchists were told to leave this year. More photos to come.

In the Arms of a Giant

A woman and man stand under the armpits of a giant human form, with reflective silver skin, long red hair, a blank white face and a strapless white satin gown.
LizZie, Mark and I continued work on LizZie's float for First Night. We made good progress since the last time, but I probably won't see the float again until it's finished due to my expected travels between now and the end of the year.

Christmas Cacophony

A stack of Christmas Cacophony song booklets rests beside an undecorated miniature evergreen tree on a stone hearth. A few more booklets are splayed on the hearth in the foreground.
It's been a bittersweet day: I'd hoped we'd be able to start selling admission to Frostburn today, but our confirmation paperwork didn't arrive in the mail. On a positive note, I was able to pick up the song books for this year's Santarchy event, which takes place on Saturday. We're expecting over one hundred Santas and other costumed participants!

Rotors

A pair of worn brake rotors rest on a cement garage floor. A car without wheels sits on the lift behind them.
I spent the day at Dan & Cindy's garage, changing the rear brakes and spark plugs on my car. I would have liked to take it for a joy ride afterwards, but the snow is falling faster than the road crews can keep up with it.

Cherry Hill, NJ

A partially-demolished shopping mall stands between a paved lot of parked cars and a mid-rise office building. The signs on both structures announce the location: Cherry Hill
Julie found us a cheap hotel room in Mt. Laurel, NJ, to crash after the M.I.A. show in Philly. We passed through Cherry Hill in between, which reminded me of a parody of Lou Reed's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" that Dr. Demento used to play about shopping malls. I was unable to find any reference of the spoof online, but I snapped this photo of Cherry Hill Mall while Jake drove by on our escape back to Pennsylvania.
